Friends,

At the close of the constitutional convention in 1787, Ben Franklin strode out the doors of Independence Hall to be greeted by a question from an onlooker in the crowd.

“Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”

Franklin’s response?

“A Republic, if you can keep it.”

If you can keep it.

The question of who will lead the nation for the next four years has been answered. It will be a KKK supported, climate denying, misogynistic con man. His name is Donald.

That answer, however repugnant, begs a pressing and far more important question: how will you, how do we, respond?

As Hillary Clinton noted in her concession speech, the opportunity to participate in democracy does not occur on four-year increments. It exists in each moment, in every action, and it is not, actually, an opportunity. It is a responsibility.

A line has been drawn and the battlefield is already taking form. Without listing the litany of protections, landscapes, and communities at risk, suffice it to say that one cannot overstate what is at stake.

It is our very future.

San Juan Citizens Alliance, our board, staff, and members, are marching to the front lines. We will put every resource and every ounce of ourselves into the fight to protect what is good, what is needed, what is sacred.

Will you stand with us?

Let them come for our public lands. Let them come for our water, for the right of our children to breathe clean air. Let them try and steal our energy future. Let them come.

We will be ready.

    How do I get involved?

    • Erika Brown says:

Thanks Maureen! The short answer is stay connected to us. We’ll be utilizing all forms of communication with our members and supporters (email, social media, local media and events) to let folks know what is happening and what is needed to demonstrate support for strong environmental regulations and commitments. We’re going to be taking our watchdog responsibility even more seriously than before and working with partners to organize the most effective actions – advocacy, activism, legal battles, etc.
