DESCRIPTION:Crosscut Saw and Axe Training Class\nJuly 12\, 5-7 pm\nJuly 13th\, 8 am – 4pm\n  \nWe’re excited to announce we’re organizing this training for volunteers interested in learning to use and maintain crosscut saws safely and efficiently. All participants’ skills will be evaluated. Successful participants will get a recommendation toward certification by the U.S. Forest Service.\n  \nRequirements\n\nComplete an 8-hour online crosscut course and pass the written test prior to July 12th. Link to class below.\nHave up-to-date CPR and First Aid Certification prior to July 12th meeting. This can be done quickly online.\nAttend Classroom review session on July 12th from 5-7 pm.\nParticipate in a full day field session on July 13th\nCommit to 4 days of field work clearing trails in the Weminuche and/or South San Juan Wilderness areas.\n\nThe course: \n\nOnline background information – Please allow 8 hours of computer time to complete this essential step. A written test is required to pass the course and progress to the second and third elements. The course can be taken any time before July 12. The course is at: umt.edu/crosscut-sawyer\nJuly 12\, Friday – 5 to 7 p.m. San Juan Citizens Alliance Office\, Smiley Building\, 1309 E 3rd Ave\, Durango\, CO. Classroom session to review the latest developments in situational awareness\, and axe and saw care. Bring your documentation of completion of the online Crosscut Sawyer course\, questions\, first aid and CPR certification (MUST BE UP TO DATE\, CAN BE DONE QUICKLY ONLINE)\, water\, leather gloves\, and note pad and pen.\nJuly 13 Saturday – 8 a.m. to 4p.m. Field session. Location to be determined\, probably Saul’s Creek near Bayfield. Bring all-leather work boots or hiking boots with a non-skid sole\, leather gloves\, hardhat\, sunglasses\, first aid kit\, water and lunch in a daypack. Wear long sleeve shirt and long pants. We will focus on bucking logs and down trees\, and deal with a variety of situations. Safety is essential. Personal Protective Equipment as listed above is required. Please bring crosscut saws and related equipment (wedges\, lubricant\, axes\, sheaths). If you don’t have them\, they can be provided. At this all-day event\, the largest group of wolf experts ever to gather in Southwest Colorado will present diverse perspectives on wolf behavior and ecology\, the significance of wolves in Native American culture\, wolf restoration and management\, and the history and future of wolves in Colorado. \nAbout the need for wolf restoration in Colorado\, Delia Malone\, Wildlife Chair for the Sierra Club Rocky Mountain Chapter\, said: “Wolves are the voice of wilderness\, but that voice has been missing from Colorado since 1945. Before European settlement of the West\, hundreds of thousands of wolves lived in dynamic balance with vast herds of bison\, elk\, pronghorn and deer. The loss of the essential apex predator has caused ecosystem failure both big and small. Whether you’re interested in water quality and fish\, protecting your home from fires & floods\, trail access\, or how you can help monitor and restore the forest\, this event is designed to answer your questions and brainstorm solutions. \n5:00-6:30 pm: Panel discussion on next steps and questions\n6:30-8:00 pm: Themed table conversations to answer questions and brainstorm solutions\nThroughout: food for purchase & resources from key partners  \nPanel:\nMatt Janowiak (San Juan National Forest)\nJim White (Colorado Parks and Wildlife)\nJulie Korb (Fort Lewis College)\nButch Knowlton (La Plata County Emergency Management)\nBrian Divine (San Juan Basin Health). \nFollowing the panel\, community members will be invited to engage with their own ideas of “what’s next” based on key areas of interest. Themed tables staffed by local leaders of every subject will offer the opportunity for participants to delve deeper into conversations around their own questions or solutions. DESCRIPTION:SJCA is proud to sponsor Durango Green Drinks\, an informal monthly gathering organized by the Sustainability Alliance of SW Colorado. A fantastic group of sustainability-minded local non-profits sponsor the event and rotate responsibilities hosting it. It is a fun and relaxed opportunity to connect\, chat\, network\, and be inspired. Brief announcements are followed by short presentations by host organizations\, which rotates monthly. There is plenty of time to network and catch up with friends. Green Drinks is non-partisan. \nApril is jointly hosted by our friends at Conservation Colorado and La Plata County Thrive Living Wage Coalition.
