Three local experts will discuss conservation and stewardship actions along the river\, clarify lingering questions about water quality\, and explain local water use and supply — now and in the future. \nTurn discussion into action by joining us for a river clean-up along the Animas River Trail from the library to the 33rd Street put-in. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Durango Public Library parking lot at 11:15 a.m. and to provide their own lunch\, snacks and water. They are encouraged to bike or carpool to their designated clean up areas. Trash pick-up supplies will be provided. \nColorado Sun Water Reporter Shannon Mullane will moderate the panel. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMarty Pool\, City of Durango’s Sustainability Manager\nDr. Heidi Steltzer\, Founder | Center for Earth Theology\nPeter Butler\, PhD.\, water quality consultant\, founding member of the Animas River Stakeholders Group\n\n[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”Small Line” line_alignment=”default” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_background” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”middle” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” bottom_padding=”2%” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.95″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”center” phone_text_alignment=”center” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” text_align=”left” row_position=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” pointer_events=”all”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][nectar_cta btn_style=”arrow-animation” heading_tag=”h4″ button_color=”accent-color” text_color=”#ffffff” button_border_thickness=”0px” link_type=”new_tab” alignment=”left” alignment_tablet=”default” alignment_phone=”default” display=”inline” display_tablet=”inherit” display_phone=”inherit” link_text=”RSVP HERE” url=”https://coloradosun.typeform.com/to/HBB5cJdj” padding_top=”20″ padding_right=”40″ padding_bottom=”20″ padding_left=”40″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”center” phone_text_alignment=”center” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

(LTPBR) can be a highly effective low-cost strategy to restore riverscape health at the scale needed to address problems the SW faces with increasing drought\, wildfires\, and sedimentation of our streams and water infrastructure.  \nParticipants will have a better understanding of the challenges of planning and implementing LTPBR and how to address those challenges.\nProvide the opportunity for networking and dialogue between land and water management agencies and organizations to help generate collaborative efforts to restore streams in the SW Basin.\nConnect agencies and organizations that are interested in cross-collaboration on fuels reduction and stream/wetlands restoration – watershed scale projects that do both.\n\n [divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”Small Line” What can we address with restoration?\n\nCatherine Ortega\, SW Wetlands Focus Committee Chair\, and Alan Kasprak\, Assistant Professor of Geosciences Fort Lewis College.\nThis section will address: 1) What are the processes\, functions\, and ecosystem services of a riverscape? The history of the major disturbances that have led to degraded waterways in SW basins (e.g.\, beaver eradication\, grazing\, development\, water delivery infrastructure); 2) An overview of process-based restoration principles and approaches that are relevant to addressing these issues. Participants will gain an understanding of the compounding issues that have led to the loss of riverscape function\, and why those functions are critical to restore.\n\n\n9:15 – 9:45 – State of the Science – A summary of research on the ecosystem services effects of successful LTPBR projects.\n\nJackie Corday\, Corday Natural Resources Consulting\nThis section will review the highlights of a comprehensive report that synthesizes the published and unpublished case studies of the effects of restoring streams with low-tech PBR and beaver-related restoration\, including the benefits observed to surface and groundwater\, water quality\, improved resilience to climate impacts\, and improved aquatic and terrestrial habitat. With 1000s of miles of streams that require restoration efforts\, low-cost scalable methods are needed. The research indicates that LTPBR is one of the most effective low-cost tools to restore stream health and improve critical ecosystem services.\n\n\n9:45 – 10:00 – Q/A session between speakers and participants.\n10:00 – 10:20 Break\n\n10:20 – 12:00 – Current Challenges for Riverscape Restoration in SW Basins. Discusses the barriers\, constraints\, what to consider for PBR project planning\, and how to collectively work through challenges. 20 minutes for each topic below to review some of the most significant challenges to LTPBR restoration work. \n\n10:20 – 10:40 – Water rights issues – Information on what typical concerns may be and how to address them in addition to review of SB270.\n\nJackie Corday\, Corday Natural Resources Consulting\n\n\n10:40 – 11:00 – USACE Permitting Process – How to navigate the permitting process for different land management agencies & ownership.\n\n Kara Hellige\, Chief\, Southern Colorado Branch of USACE\n\n\n11:00 – 11:20 – Social Issues with Beaver – most LTPBR projects will have the goal of restoring streams in historic beaver habitat with the intent of assisting beaver recolonization for long-term maintenance of stream health. Thus\, projects must take into account and plan for avoiding or addressing potential conflicts (e.g. preventing culverts from being plugged and roads flooded).\n\nNichole Fox\, Give a Dam Executive Director\n\n\n11:20 – 11:40 – Capacity Funding for Planning & Implementing Projects – an overview of some of the best opportunities for state and federal funding. A couple grants are now available to address “lack of capacity” to plan for projects and several sources are available for implementing projects.\n\nAlex Funk\, Director of Water Resources and Senior Counsel at Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.\n\n\n11:40 – 12:00 – Q/A session between speakers and participants.\n\n12:00 – 1:00 Lunch Break. RSVP for access to the free lunch buffet! \n\n12:30 – 1:00 – Keynote Speaker – Conserving and restoring riparian\, fisheries\, and water resources in a changing climate – a five-year strategy for the BLM’s aquatic resources program.\n\nEd Rumbold\, BLM Hydrologist/Aquatic Resources Program Lead\n\n\n1:00 – 1:30 – Taking a Watershed Approach to LTPBR Project Planning – How to identify and where to begin?\n\nShawn Conner\, Restoration Ecologist with BIO-Logic\, Inc.\nProcess based restoration techniques take on a variety of treatment forms and are specific to site potential and differing restoration goals. In this presentation\, Shawn will provide an overview of watershed scale process-based restoration techniques and how practitioners can begin to identify project area and prioritize treatments.\n\n\n\n1:30 – 3:00 – Stories of Success and Lessons Learned. Speaker Presentations on LTPBR Application Throughout the State. \n\n1:30 – 2:00 – Taylor Park Wetland Restoration Project: Trail Creek\n\nEli Smith\, Stewardship Director with High Country Conservation Advocates\, and Adde Sharp\, Colorado River Watershed Project Coordinator with the National Forest Foundation.\nThis presentation will showcase the highly successful collaboration between their organizations\, the USFS\, and many other partners to plan\, fund\, and implement a multi-year LTPBR project in the Upper Gunnison Basin. This project quickly welcomed community volunteers who helped implement beaver mimicry structures\, involvement from academic institutions\, and a pair of local beavers.\n\n\n2:00 – 2:30 – Rio Grande National Forest – Wet Meadows Restoration Project\n\nJason Remshardt\, Fisheries and Wildlife Program Manager RGNF\, and Connor Born\, Stewardship Coordinator with Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project\nTalk will discuss installation of beaver dam analog (BDA) sites focused on areas that would improve native fish habitat\, methods used for project monitoring\, and a brief overview of beaver relocation efforts on the Rio Grande National Forest.\n\n\n2:30 – 3:00 – Wildcat Stream Enhancement Project: What & Why? – Log pour-over structures for distributed and resilient trout refuge\n\nRaymond Rose\, Dolores River Anglers Trout Unlimited Chapter.\nTalk will highlight ongoing efforts of installing log pour-over structures that capitalize on seasonal high flows to generate and maintain distributed and resilient refuge for trout amid declining stream flows within the Upper Dolores River watershed.\n\n\n\n3:00 – 3:15 –Afternoon Q/A session between speakers and participants.
