SUMMARY:Wolf Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Durango Wolf Symposium\n\nThursday\, November 29th\nFort Lewis College\nStudent Life Center Gymnasium\n8:30 am-12:00 pm (4 speakers)\n1:00-4:30 pm (5 speakers)\n7:00-9:00 pm Public Discussion\n\nThe Ft. Lewis College Department of Biology is hosting a free\, open-to-the-public symposium\, at the Fort Lewis College Student Life Center Gymnasium on Thursday\, November 29th. At this all-day event\, the largest group of wolf experts ever to gather in Southwest Colorado will present diverse perspectives on wolf behavior and ecology\, the significance of wolves in Native American culture\, wolf restoration and management\, and the history and future of wolves in Colorado. \nAbout the need for wolf restoration in Colorado\, Delia Malone\, Wildlife Chair for the Sierra Club Rocky Mountain Chapter\, said: “Wolves are the voice of wilderness\, but that voice has been missing from Colorado since 1945. Before European settlement of the West\, hundreds of thousands of wolves lived in dynamic balance with vast herds of bison\, elk\, pronghorn and deer. The loss of the essential apex predator has caused ecosystem failure both big and small. This high-level gathering brings together great minds\, proven facts\, and differing perspectives for a day of conversation and education.” \nMark Pearson\, our Executive Director\, will be presenting Perspectives on the Colorado Wolf Management Plan. \nFor more info and to register go to bit.ly/co-wolf. \n\n\nShare and invite others using the Facebook Event

SUMMARY:Public Hearing on Double Drilling
DESCRIPTION:Special Hearing: Hilcorp’s Double  Drilling Request\nMonday\, November 19th\, 9 am\nNew Mexico Oil Conservation Commission\nPorter Hall\, 1st floor\, Wendell Chino Building\,\n1220 South St. Francis Drive\, Santa Fe\, New Mexico\n  \nAs you may have heard\, Hilcorp is requesting approval from the State of New Mexico’s Oil Conservation Commission to double the density of allowable wells in the Blanco-Mesaverde Gas Pool in San Juan and Rio Arriba Counties. That could mean an additional 8\,000 new wells and recompletions in northwest New Mexico.  Communities in San Juan and Rio Arriba counties already are overwhelmed by oil and gas. Northwestern New Mexico is home to more than 40\,000 oil and gas wells as well as ancillary compressors\, processing plants and pipelines. \nNo analysis has been done on the impacts of  doubling the well density. We’re additionally concerned because approval of this request would circumvent the current public process required when an exemption to the well density is requested. \nWhat can you do?\nCome to the meeting! Speak out against this request! There will be apublic hearing on the issue November 19th where the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission will be making their decision. The public is invited to provide comment and San Juan Citizens Alliance will again be attempting to persuade the commission not to approve Hilcorp’s request. It is critical for the commission to get feedback from the public. \nCan’t make it? Submit comments against the proposal to florene.davidson@state.nm.us. Below are some suggestions for talking points. Please edit and adapt as you see fit. \nTalking Points\nThese are some suggestions for public comments either in person at the hearing or to submit via email to florene.davidson@state.nm.us. \nPublic Input\nAs a public agency\, NMOCC has both the regulatory authority and the duty to consider the concerns of the public about applications brought forth before the commission. \n\nAs a member of the public I am deeply concerned about how this application would affect public health and the environment. In particular\, I am concerned about the potential of this proposal to impact water resources\, to create additional surface disturbance and landscape fragmentation\, and to negatively affect to air quality and contribute to climate change. Disregarding the concerns of  San Juan and Rio Arriba county citizens by NMOCC concerning the magnitude of Hilcorp’s well density change application would be extremely troubling.\nSan Juan County is already on the cusp of exceeding safe ozone levels and oil and gas development is a major contributor to the Delaware-sized methane hot spot that is a black eye on New Mexico\, the oil and gas industry\, and the nation as a whole. I am concerned about whether Hilcorp is taking adequate steps to capture methane while drilling new wells or doing recompletions. Doubling drilling will certainly result in declining air quality that will affect 13\,000 kids and adults in San Juan County who struggle with asthma.\n*If you are a resident of San Juan or Rio Arriba Counties\, include specifics about how you have been impacted by oil and gas. The NMOCC is particularly interested in hearing about impacts to property.\n\nLack of Impact Analysis\nThe Bureau of Land Management’s 2003 Resource Management Plan for the Farmington Field Office is out of sync with this proposal for double drilling in the Blanco-Mesaverde gas pool. This proposal warrants a new process of comprehensive environmental review and public consultation to ensure that any negative impacts to communities\, correlative rights\, environmental and cultural resources are mitigated. \nHilcorp\n\nHilcorp is a bad faith actor with a history of violations in other states. In New Mexico\, I am deeply concerned about whether Hilcorp’s recompletions in the Blanco-Mesaverde are in compliance with EPA rules that require green completions to capture methane.\nI am concerned about whether OCC provided enough public notice for those members of the public who are affected to know about and be able to attend this hearing or the September 13 hearing. Since then\, Hilcorp has made misleading and confusing statements in the media about the scope of this application. Hilcorp has suggested that this application is only about re-completions\, but there is nothing in the application that limits Hilcorp or other operators to recompletions. We know that new wells could be drilled as a result of this proposal\, and Hilcorp’s attempt to conceal this from the public is troubling. \n\n\nMore on Double Drilling\n\nSJCA Shines Light on Proposal to Double Drilling Density\nThe Truth About Double Drilling\nDecision Delayed at Hilcorp’s State Hearing

SUMMARY:Bridging the Divide: Growing from the Ashes
DESCRIPTION:Bridging the Divide: \nGrowing from the Ashes\nSeptember 7th\, 5-8 pm\nSeptember 8th\, 9 am – 3 pm\nWolf Creek Ski Area & South Fork Visitors Center\n  \nNote: This event was originally scheduled for June 22-23rd\, but due to multiple active fires in the area has been rescheduled for September 7-8th. \nAlthough FREE\, registration is required for both events so that we can make sure to have enough food. Register HERE. \nMountain Studies Institute\, San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership\, Firewise of Southwest Colorado\, Southern Rockies Fire Science Network\, and the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests are offering communities affected by the 2013 West Fork Fire an opportunity to discuss the history of the fire\, current conditions\, and what the future may bring. \nJoin us from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on September 7th for FREE FOOD\, BEER and Conversation at the Wolf Creek Ski Area. Sponsored by Riff Raff Brewing Co\, Three Barrels Brewing\, and the Wolf Creek Ski Area. \nIn 2002\, the Million Fire burned 9\,346 acres near South Fork\, CO\, costing $9.8 million in firefighting costs. In 2013\, the same area was struck by the West Fork Fire Complex\, which burned over 109\,049 acres of the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests and cost over $31 million. Five and 16 years later\, we are bringing together communities\, land managers\, and scientists from both sides of the continental divide to reflect on the Million and West Fork fires\, discuss post-burn treatments and changes to the landscape\, and think about the future of our communities and forests. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn September 8th\, from 9:00am to 3:00pm\, there will be an opportunity to tour the burn areas with resource specialists\, emergency responders\, community members and land managers.\nWe will meet at the South Fork Visitor Center\, organize into vans\, and drive to diverse burn areas to talk about the effects of the fire\, how the burn area is recovering\, and how communities are adapting. Lunch will be provided by the San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership and Firewise of Southwest Colorado. Wear appropriate shoes\, be prepared for weather\, and if you have a hard hat\, please bring it along. \nTo watch a video series on the West Fork Fire Complex created by the Southern Rockies Fire Science Network\, go here.

SUMMARY:April Durango Green Drinks
DESCRIPTION:SJCA is proud to sponsor Durango Green Drinks\, an informal monthly gathering organized by the Sustainability Alliance of SW Colorado. A fantastic group of sustainability-minded local non-profits sponsor the event and rotate responsibilities hosting it. It is a fun and relaxed opportunity to connect\, chat\, network\, and be inspired. Brief announcements are followed by short presentations by host organizations\, which rotates monthly. There is plenty of time to network and catch up with friends. Green Drinks is non-partisan. \nApril is jointly hosted by our friends at Conservation Colorado and La Plata County Thrive Living Wage Coalition. As always\, Green Drinks is held on the last Thursday of the month in the back room of Carver Brewing Company from 5-6:45 pm. \nInvite friends and share on Facebook:
